And the winner is Germany…

11 February 2017

Or better two German offices, who won a controversial architecture competition of ideas. They designed a new roof structure for the historical Arena di Verona – a project which would cost approximately 13,5 million euros.

But does it really make sense to cover the more than 2000-year-old amphitheater? This question has triggered a heated discussion:

  • Some say yes – it does make sense – not only to allow the opera performances and concerts on bad weather days, but to protect the historic building from harmful pollutants.
  • Some say no – it doesn’t make sense – because it would deface the Arena and could even damage the structure.

We’d like to congratulate Schlaich Bergermann Partner and gmp Architekten von Gerkan Marg und Partner in any case, because we think having been chosen out of more than 80 participants from around the world is an amazing achievement!
