It is probably due to the many rainfalls this last spring, that Lake Garda’s nature is still beautifully green, even this midsummer. Green is also the flag, that some surrounding woods received as an award. And “green” is our current newsflash because Lake Garda is more popular than ever, a fact that is easily visible when looking at the increased number of tourists throughout the last few years. Lately also more and more visitors from places like Russia and China come to Lake Garda. And where there are many people, environmental protection becomes a big issue. A topic, which is luckily adressed in many locations surrounding the lake.
While some localities lining Lake Garda have chosen to temporarily prohibit cars and bicycles in their city centres, municipalities like Bardolino and Salò found a good way to cope with their garbage.
Other good news: cyclists can be delighted to hear that the stunning cycling trail in Limone has been inaugurated. The exciting cycling route is in part suspended and floating over the water and already now registers record numbers of visitors. The cycling path is furthermore helping to reduce the risk of congestion, since the partly narrow roads of the west bank now can be primarily used by cars.
And who is planning a visit on lovely Lake Garda, should consider the possibility of a property inspections and tours through interesting real estates. But be careful: Also real estate agents could be on their summer holiday in this period. It is therefore advisable to arrange broker appointments ahead of time.
Wherever there is a high number of visitors, there is a high number of polution in general. Oftentimes rubbish is not seperated or can even be found on the streets. Bardolino’s solution to the problem was symbolic. More than 100 children and young people of a summercamp were involved in an environmental project collecting garbage on the streets. With their gloves, buckets and shovels, they attracted attention and were able to grow their sense of responsibilty related to environmental issues.
On many places lining Lake Garda an extra medical care and emergency service for foreigners, holidaymakers and locals is offered throughout the summer season in addition to the normal hospitals. On the east side of the lake, the so-called Guardia medica touristica is open Monday through Sunday, holidays included, for a total of 175 hours a week. The service is active in Lazise, Peschiera, Castelnuovo, Bardolino, Garda, Brenzone, Malcesine, Spiazzi, San Zeno and Ferrara.
Due to its modern structure, the pavillion has been a controversial project. But now, after two years, construction works have been completed. The glass cube, which is situated on top of the Rocca di Lonato, is now ready to be used for all sorts of different events throughout the year. The structure is capable of containing up to 290 people. It offers a kitchen and could be used for different occasions – from weddings to conferences while providing an insight into the famous Ugo da Como foundation.
Protecting the ecological system of Lake Garda, its drinking water quality, and also the habitat of numerous living creatures, is a concern that brought Lake Garda to the participation of the project Incatch. Incatch is an international project, which is dedicated to the management of water basins in general. In Peschiera del Garda a meeting has been held, in which centre there was a small robot ready to be tested on the lake. With those tests new ways of water analysis and water controls could be found.
Good news! Finaly! Salò is Lake Garda’s first municipality to implement a long awaited service for people owning a holiday home: Everybody having a secondary residence in Salò, can apply for a Sunday rubbish collection service, which collects the garbage produced over the weekend. Registrations can be made at the environmental agency of the municipality (email@example.com). The service, which would be desired in many places, is presently being in a test phase and is active at announced times in three places of the municipality: Carmine, Campoverde and in the district Barbarano.
We already reported about the blue or purple flag awards, which have been assigned for environmental protection issues and easily accessible buildings. Now another distinction flag is added: A green one. Nine mountain communities can be proud of the award assigned for their environmental measures taken related to agriculture and tourism evidencing quality: Salò, Gardone Riviera, Toscolano Maderno, Gargnano, Tignale, Tremosine, Limone, Valvestino and Magasa. Numerous hiking trails and parks in those woods witness the development of the highly valued environmental resources of these beautiful areas situated high above Lake Garda.
