Newsflash: Lake Garda in May 2018

31 May 2018

Lake Garda is delighted to report that it gained two awards in the beautiful month of May: the city of Sirmione received the “Bandiera Lilla”, the purple flag. It stands for “barrier-free” locations, which put great emphasis on making public buildings accessible for people with special needs and disabilities.

Gardone Riviera has received the blue flag, for the eighth time in a row. The “Bandiera Blu” is awarded by the European environmental foundation FEE since over 30 years for excellent performance in environmental work. Only bathing areas and marinas, which stick to the strictly given rules of environmental criteria throughout Europe, are able to receive the flag.

Swimming temperatures where only given every now and again this month, the weather conditions rather reminded us of a typical April. But the many sunshine hours this May have been definitely perfect for cyclists all over the Lake Garda area.

Lazise: Restauration works alongside the castle walls

Important restauration works are to be done on over 95 metres along the castle walls of Lazise. Safety measures have already been taken, construction works are about to start. Between the years 2006 and 2012 the city of Lazise has renovated the public part of the castle walls, now the parts being privately owned will be restored. Weed control, gentle cleansing of the walls, consolidation of the rocks and the towers as well as plastering services are part of the project – in short everything making the walls prettier and safer. Under dicussion is also a project, which allows the two towers to be transformed into a museum or at least to be accessible for tourists. But currently this idea has not been approved.

In Barcelona and Malaga as well as in Slowena the system is already at work and has now has been also installed in Peschiera del Garda, Valleggio and Ponti sul Mincio. To make the life of a cyclists easier by not having to carry around street maps anymore, a GPS device has been invented, which works via Smartphone and can be downloaded for free. The App is called “Bike Square”. There are 6 theme-routes marked alongside the beautiful river Mincio, all of them far away from heavily trafficed roads, pointing out attraction sites, overnight accomodations and E-Bike-rentals. Guides can be booked in order to have a local person explaining the gorgious area while strolling through it.

Salò: Riding a bicycle prohibited in the city centre during tourist season

Until the end of October, it is prohibited to ride a bike in the pedestrian zone of Salò – from Porta dell’Orologio to Porta del Carmine. Also in Via San Carlo it is not allowed to cycle, in Via Butturini, Via Fantoni and on Lungolago Zanardelli. Where there is a great number of pedestrians (as it usually is the case during tourist season), people riding bikes can be dangerous, they say. The polices advices to get off the bikes and push them in these areas.

Sirmione: The city of Sirmione is awarded with the prestigious “Bandiera Lilla”

To make public buildings easily accessible for people with physical disabilities is a goal that Sirmione persues since a long time and that the city wants to develop more and more. The town has therfore been awarded with the prestigious “Bandiera Lilla”, the purple flag. All easily accessible buildings of Sirmione are listed on the following website: www.bandieralilla.it. Through this, people with various physical difficulties should get the possibility to move barrier-free and to be able to plan a trip to the city in advance.
