Lake Garda saved Verona this month. These were the headlines in all important newspapers of the region and it has been that way. At Lake Garda, heavy thunderstorms occurred – at least for several days. They lead to a threatening highwater level of the river Adige, which would have caused severe flooding of Verona as well as the Veronese areas close to the river. This is the reason why Lake Garda had to collect the excess water of the river. The drain channel of Nago- Torbole has been opened and more than 20 million cubic meters of water have been flowing into the lake.
But it has also been “raining” something else this month: quite some awards. Bardolino has won the first price in a contest, which honored small Italian towns with the most beautiful flower beds. And Desenzano and Salò can be proud to be amongst the 100 localities of Italy, which like to be visited the most.
A wintery atmosphere has now arrived even at Lake Garda. In November it is also time the prepare the beautiful Limonaie del Garda, the lemon groves, for their hibernation period. But good ideas are not falling asleep, a fact that has lately been proved by Nago-Torbole and its green lantern-lighting, which receives its energy by Lake Garda’s wind
The lovely town of Bardolino has received the first price – il premio nazionale “Comuni Fioriti – for it’s beautiful flower beds. Who knows Bardolino, has also seen the flamboyant flower beds along the lakeside. 32 000 tulips bloom in springtime. A real feast for the eyes, which has also convinced the jury. The price money of 2000 euros has been forwarded to the town of Bardolino as flowers and plants. The touristy small town with more than 5000 inhabitants (a requirement to participate at the competition) took part at this national contest for the first time. In total 182 villages of Italy were in the competition.
This month, in Bardolino, restoration works of the medieval church of San Severo have been coming to an end and can now be admired. The church is well known as a masterpiece of roman art.
And: In the course of the festa degli alberi, the tree festival, the municipality of Bardolino donated five barrier-free garden areas to the primary school, on which pupils can plant flowers and herbs during their school year.
Desenzano has been elected as one of the 100 most popular places of Italy. The town is attractive for its cultural, artistic and environmentally-friendly qualities. The old lemon groves of Villavetro, a district of Gargnano, are not operating since a long time. It has been 18 years ago that the civil protection was ordering to open the overflow channel in Nago-Torbole, to redirect loads of river water into Lake Garda. Now it happened again, and it has not been great for the eco system of Lake Garda as the water of the river is a lot colder and muddier than the lake. But the measurements taken have been highly appreciated by Verona and the areas close to the river Adige since the lake saved many people from dramatic flooding.
Other news from Torbole: A wind power generator transfers energy to the street lighting along the lakeside of Torbole. The start-up company WindCity provided a 7 meter-high, wind power generator, which patented systems allow the generator to work at any given weather condition, even when irregular gusty winds occur, it can still generate energy.
Being one of the last restore works of former Piazza Rossa, the new auditorium will be ready by next spring. A lot of different construction works have been redeveloping the piazza since a while. A new market square with many green areas and barrier-free access has been created. The ongoing works of the auditorium will create space for 120 visitors with a nice reception area, new acoustics and lighting facilities. The structure can be used for theatre events, concerts, conferences and similar events. It has a front entrance and a back entrance, which is connected to the parking spaces.
Just like Desenzano, also Salò is amongst the 100 most popular places of Italy. The major of the town is especially proud of the local violin festival, as it is a point of interest for many artists. The lemon groves, Limonaie del Garda, are a beautiful tradition where fragrant lemon trees become protagonists and main ingredients for a series of delicious products like Limoncello, marmalade, syrup and lots more. Unfortunately, a lot of those old mansions, which are former lemon groves, have become not more than sites for tourists, interested people or pupils. But the lemon trees of the company Prà de la Fam, which counts about 90 plants – lemon, cedar, orange, mandarine and bergamot prepares their plants for the winter hibernation phase. Moveable wooden poles are placed over the plants and connected with glass facades in order to keep the wind and cold temperatures away from the plants while allowing them to get enough light.
As we have already reported several times, Marciaga is working on a big project promoting sports, in particular bicycle sports, and everybody appreciating outdoor activities. It is covered by pebble stone, but also stone powder, which is a suitable floor covering for all types of bikes. High trees will be planted and a car park with 18 lots for cars and 10 parking lots for motorcycles will be built. The big parking lot will be at the beginning of the cycle trail in Campagniola.
