Peschiera del Garda – UNESCO World Heritage site

25 July 2017

The Venetian walls of defence of Peschiera del Garda become World Heritage sites! It is already the 53rd Italian site listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, which makes Italy the leading place in terms of numbers of UNESCO World Heritage sites in a country. Along with Peschiera del Garda, the fascinating town on the southern coast of Lake Garda, other two extraordinary Italian defence systems of the Republic of Venice – Palmanova in Friuli and Bergamo in the Lombardy region – were elected.

The starlike fortification of Peschiera del Garda is one of the most impressive Venetian works of defence of the Venetian Republic between the 15th and the 17th century. Its fortification walls are over 2 kilometres long and with that Peschiera del Garda is the biggest fort on Lake Garda. Its purpose was to defend the lake, but also the river Mincio, which is the only outflow of Lake Garda and crosses the town of Peschiera. Venetian and Austrian buildings dominate the cityscape of the lovely town. The historic barracks and artillery workplaces remind of former times. Beautiful biketrails and walkways along the river Mincio are another highlight of the area. Peschiera del Garda, now being a UNESCO World Heritage site, is not only making its inhabitants proud, but also the numerous culturally interested visitors it attracts year by year.
