In Italy properties are subject to income tax. If a property is occupied by its owner or members of his family, the cadastral revenue is completely tax-deductible. If on the other hand the property is occupied by other persons, 85 % of the revenue from the annual rent is subject to income tax.

Therefore, even foreigners who own property in Italy are obliged to an Italian tax declaration! Income tax is payable in two or three installments: 16th June (1° installment), 30th November (2° installment) and 16th June of the following year (2° or 3° installment).

Tax in Italy is an obligation, which means that the taxpayer himself has to calculate his tax and pay it on the due date without having received a tax assessment. As failure to pay or late payments are often punished after many years with high fines and their relevant default interests payable, it is recommended that you get an Italian tax consultant to take charge of this for you.

Should you consider taking up permanent residence in Italy, or pursue a professional activity here for more than 183 days of the year, you are automatically liable to tax on the whole of your income, whatever its sources.
