The Codice Fiscale, a kind of personal tax number for the identification of the citizen, is a 16-digit combination of letters and numbers consisting of name, first name, gender, date of birth and place of birth or country of origin. Those who remain in Italy for a longer period do not get very far without a Codice Fiscale, as this number is an essential condition for legal transactions of any type.
The Codice Fiscale can be applied for through each Italian fiscal office and is free of charge. This application can be undertaken in person or with the help of an authorization by a third party. In Germany or Austria this Codice Fiscale can even be applied for through the Italian diplomatic mission abroad. In both cases you have to present your identity card or passport and must have completed the relevant application form. If the Codice Fiscale is applied for via an authorized third party, this person also has to present his or her identity card or passport. Often the authorities want to see proof of residence or employment in Italy.
